How good are Manchester City, or was 3-0 victory down to Liverpool failings?

It may only be the second weekend of the new Premier League season but Manchester City's 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Eastlands gave Roberto Mancini's side an early advantage in the race for the Champions League places at the end of the season.

City gave a first start to James Milner and the new signing was influential in the creating the first goal for Gareth Barry in the 13th minute, claiming a neat assist with a cutback for his former Aston Villa team-mate.

Carlos Tevez added two more goals in the second half, the second a penalty, as City strolled to victory and sent out a warning to their rivals in the Premier League.

Liverpool were dealt a major blow before the kick off when midfielder Javier Mascherano was not named in their squad, and things didn’t get much better for Roy Hodgson’s side as they struggled to make any impact on the match.

So after such a convincing win over their rivals should Manchester City be considered serious contenders for this Premier League title? Are they now capable of dismissing sides of Liverpool's calibre with the kind of clinical efficiency needed to challenge over the course of an entire season?

Or does this result just show how much work Liverpool have to do to challenge for a Champions League place at the end of the season?

Or was it just one game where everything went right for the home side, and nothing fell for the visitors?
