Our new No.3 also spoke about teaming up with his old boss again, what Fulham captain Danny Murphy told him about signing for the Reds and how John Barnes was an inspiration to him during his days as a youngster at Charlton Athletic.
Welcome to Liverpool Paul, how happy are you to be here?
I'm very excited to be here. I can't wait to get started and I'm really looking forward to the challenge.
Was it a big decision for you to leave Fulham and London?
No, not when a club like Liverpool comes in for you. You look at the background and history they have got and they are one of the most famous names in football. It also helped me with the manager being here who I know well. When Liverpool came in for me it was an easy choice.
You will feel at home straight away though as there are a few southern accents around the place with the likes of Joe Cole, Glen Johnson and Jonjo Shelvey...
[laughs] Yeah there's a few of us from London and I know them all pretty well, and hopefully I will get to know the other players just as well.
How does it feel then to team up with Roy Hodgson again?
I'm excited by it. I know what the manager is about and he knows what I am about. I had a great time with him at Fulham for two-and-a-half years. He did really well for Fulham and hopefully we can have great success at Liverpool and we can achieve bigger and better things.
Was Roy a major factor in you signing for Liverpool?
Yes one of them, but when Liverpool come knocking on the door you don't turn them down and say no.
Liverpool have been on the look-out for a left back all summer so how pleased are you that Roy chose you?
It's pleasing. I've known the manager for a while now and he knows what I can do. Hopefully I can bring that to Liverpool and make the team stronger.
Did you also speak to Danny Murphy, who was a favourite here during his time at Liverpool?
Yes and Danny spoke very highly of this club. He told me how well the club is run, how good it is and how special it is to play for. He told me I am going to love every minute of it.
All Liverpool fans remember your goal in Cardiff for West Ham in the FA Cup final, will you have any banter with Pepe Reina about it?
I've only scored a few goals so that is one I do remember well. I will have to get to know Pepe first before I start giving some stick out but hopefully we have some fun about it together.
It was so close to being the winning goal in the FA Cup as well wasn't it?
It was in extra-time and I thought it was going to be the winning goal but Steven Gerrard had other ideas. I remember Steven was suffering from cramp and I told him during the game that he should go off and be ready for the World Cup, but then he goes and hits that thunderbolt and Liverpool go on to win it. You just knew if the ball had fallen to him like that he would be the only one player who could score a goal like that. It was just a great strike.
How much are you looking forward to playing alongside the likes of Gerrard and Fernando Torres?
I am really excited about that. I just want to get started now and settle quickly and hopefully we can do really well this year.
Is Liverpool a club you've always had a lot of respect for?
Yes of course and I know they have had some fantastic players over the years like Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes. I played with John at Charlton when I was a kid so I know a lot about the club from him. He used to talk about Liverpool and he spoke to the young players at Charlton about the history and background of the club. He has a lot of respect for this club and he was a big player here.
Are you looking forward to playing in front of the Kop?
I have played against Liverpool at Anfield and the crowd are always fantastic towards their team and give them great support. I am looking forward to playing in front of them for Liverpool.
What do you hope to achieve at Liverpool?
I want to win silverware. I believe this club is capable of doing that and hopefully we can start this year.
You enjoyed great success in the Europa League with Fulham when you reached the final last season. Are you looking forward to playing for Liverpool in Europe?
I am really excited by that. Liverpool have a great tradition in Europe. We got to the final with Fulham last season but hopefully we can go one step further this year and win it with Liverpool.
