Aston Villa midfielder James Milner will rebuff advances from Manchester United if Liverpool come calling.

Milner has been a revelation this season for Aston Villa and formed the spine of Martin O'Neill's team for most of the campaign.

His stunning work-rate in the middle of the park and long-range shooting abilites earned him this year's PFA Young Player of the Year award. It is not surprising that moneymen from both sides of Manchester have rolled up at Villa's doorstep in order to secure his services.

According to tabloid reports in England however, Milner would rather move to Anfield.

News of the World quoted a source close to the 24-year-old as saying: "Being born in Leeds, there is no way James wants to play for Manchester United.

"His preferred Premier League club is Liverpool."

However, coach Martin O'Neill will drive a hard bargain with any club interested in signing his most prized asset. News of the World quoted a source close to the manager as saying: "Martin doesn't want to start the summer feeling like he's pushing a rock up a mountain because the club have let Milner go too cheaply.

"This is a player Villa have turned into an England international, who has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier League and who has discovered a whole new role in central midfield thanks to Martin.

"To let somebody of that quality and stature go without a fight and at a price City believe is a bargan would be counter-productive.

"Nobody at Villa wants to see Milner leave and the club will speak with him before he goes to the World Cup about a contract extension.

"But if his heart is set on leaving, then Villa must get the absolute top price for him."
