Rafael Benitez To Target Top British Talent For Liverpool During Summer Transfer Window.

Reds boss believe Brits understand best what it is to play for LFC.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that the club will continue to target British talent as he looks to build a team capable of reviving the Reds' flagging fortunes this summer.

Jonjo Shelvey, 18, has already arrived from Charlton Athletic in recent weeks whilst youngsters such as Raheem Sterling have joined the academy.

With the likes of Glen Johnson also having joined last year, Benitez is keen to see more bright young British players at Anfield.

"It is something that we have always tried to do. We tried to sign Gareth Barry, we did the same with Glen Johnson. That was always the idea," the Spaniard told his club's official website.

"We have tried to bring in British players with the right mentality and the passion for the club.
"We want them to know what it means to play for Liverpool Football Club.

"Shelvey is an addition like that. We are trying to do what is best for the club. We have a long-term plan in place and we try to follow that."

Benitez does though still have faith in the players already in his squad to improve the club's fortunes after a disappointing season which saw them finish seventh in the Premier League table - their lowest finish in 11 years.

"This team has good players and we have a good team," he added.

"We just had too many problems, too many injuries. We also had some difficulty dealing with expectation that everyone was thinking about us at the beginning of the season."
