The Reds have been linked with Swedish star for the past week but Hodgson has now rejected the idea of a deal for him, claiming he didn't fit the bill for the type of player he wanted to bring in.
Asked if Toivonen could arrive he said: "No. Unlikely. He's a good player but not the profile I'm looking for."
Speculation in Monday's papers has once again linked West Ham striker Carlton Cole with a move to Anfield with reports indicating the Reds could be willing to pay £10million for the England international.
Hodgson refused to comment on whether Cole would be arriving but following an injury to David Ngog the 62-year-old says he is very keen to bring in a new striker.
"We've got space to add a player. We'd like another striker, we've said that all along and there's no point me denying it," said the Reds boss.
"But we still haven't found the right man and time is running out for us."
