Hodgson looks to bolster squad in January.

After enduring their worst ever start to a Premier League season, Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has declared the need to make 'five or six' signings in the January transfer window.

Despite moving up the league, thanks to wins over Blackburn and Bolton, it seems Hodgson is desperate to bring in reinforcements with a striker his main priority.

"We are going to be very interested in improving our squad in January," Hodgson told the Daily Star. "I'm prepared to accept that a number of players we're looking to sign do make five or six - but I don't wish to specify positions other than one is obviously a front player.

"In January we should be really looking to solve one or two situations. We are desperately short of players. Front players. Having three front players at the club, and that's if you include Ryan Babel, is nowhere near good enough.

"If Fernando (Torres) isn't playing one week, you have got to get someone in who has got the same level of quality," continued the former Fulham boss.

One striker being linked heavily with a move to Anfield is Bayern Munich hitman Mario Gomez. The German international has struggled to hit top form since his £25 million move from Stuttgart in 2009, with Bayern now looking to offload the striker on a permanent deal.

Hodgson had previously attempted to bring the 25-year-old to Anfield on loan in the summer but was told that the Munich club wanted a transfer fee in the region of £16 milllion.
